What happens in a typical therapy session will depend on a number of factors; whether you’re at the start, middle or end of therapy, what kind of therapy you are doing (e.g., CBT, psychodynamic, person centred-counselling, EMDR), and what problems you’re working on.
There are, however, common factors that occur across therapeutic approaches, at all stages of therapy. Your therapist will be keen to hear what you have to say about any difficulties that you have been experiencing and what feelings and thoughts might have come up for you at that time, or perhaps as you are recalling it.
Your therapist will listen intently and will not judge you for the way you feel, think or respond to it. Therapists will want to help you to understand how a problem may have come about and help bring about a change in your life outside of therapy, how direct this is will depend on the nature of the difficulty and therapeutic approach. Here at Counselling Psychology Online, we offer a range of therapies which are all recognised by NICE (The National Institute for Clinical Excellence) including: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) and Compassion Focussed Therapy.
