When embarking on therapy to improve your mental health and well-being, one of the most common questions people ask is, “How many sessions of therapy will I need?” It’s a natural inquiry given the time and sometimes financial input that you will have to give – plus perhaps your desire to be in a more content place. While we understand the desire for a clear roadmap, the honest answer is, “At this stage, we don’t know” as every personal journey is unique. Read on…

The Initial Assessment

This intitial assessment is an essential step in determining the approximate number of sessions that may be required. It allows the us to gain insight into the nature and complexity of your issues and to understand your concerns, goals, and the challenges you’re facing. Typically, we begin by suggesting between 6 to 20 sessions.

Factors to consider in therapy session numbers

Several factors can influence the duration of therapy:

Nature of the Problem: The complexity and severity of the issue you’re dealing with play a significant role. Some concerns may be resolved in a relatively short time, while others require more in-depth exploration and intervention.

Progress: Therapy is a dynamic process, and progress varies from person to person. If you’re making steady progress and achieving your therapy goals, you may need fewer sessions than initially estimated. On the other hand, if challenges persist or new issues arise, we may suggest that therapy continues beyond the initial estimate.

Long-standing Issues: Problems that have been present for many years, especially those deeply rooted in your history, may require more extended treatment.

Multiple Difficulties: If you’re dealing with multiple difficulties, it’s essential to address each of them. This may extend the duration of therapy to ensure all aspects are adequately explored and treated.

Ongoing Assessment and Collaboration

Throughout your therapy journey, we will continuously assess your progress and speak to you about how things are going – which might involve suggesting more or less therapy sessions.

While we cannot provide an exact number of sessions upfront, we will have a better understanding of your therapy duration following the initial assessment. Therapy is a personalised process, and the number of sessions required is as unique as you are.
